Random

Huh. So I post a random comment on Scott's webpage today, and he calls me and tells me that I am not random, so he was just confused, thinking that it related to some conversation we had. He said that in order to be able to write random comments you need to have the specific type of sense of humor that freely distributes random comments. I, appparently, do not have this storied history. I am, apparently, roundly boring and predictable. I do not find this commentary on my musings flattering.

All day long, I think completely random thoughts. We all do. Some are funny, some not so much. But there they sit momentarily, easily dismissed by the next purposeful thought when we remember that we are actually supposed to be doing something, not just letting our minds wander around in the open fields of thought. And yet, it is a waste. Someone should know these random thoughts. They have value, and are to be appreciated. And what other form is more suited for this than Internet posts? None, I tell you.

So I will keep posting random comments, and maybe even saying them if I have the courage, and maybe that will confuse those around me who do not expect me to be random. But isn't that the point of being random? To not make sense? Here's what the fine folks at Merriam-Webster had to say about this:

There is no purpose to random. It can just be fun like that. So to all those who specialize in random, my hat is off to you, it is a difficult and highly entertaining form of humor. For those, like me, who wander into their spotlight occasionally, fear not! Randomness is not only acceptable, but encouraged. We need a lot less seriousness and a lot more nonsensical around here.
