Reunion

I have been out of high school for 10 years now. This makes me certifiably ancient. Apart from that, it makes me a member of the the 10-year reunion invitation list. It does not, however, make me a member of the 10-year reunion attendee list.

Because I didn't go.

My 10-year high school reunion was on November 4, a scant week or so ago. I voluntarily skipped my 10-year high school reunion. With great joy and tremendous fanfare. It was held a scant 5 miles or so from my apartment, and I rejoiced in knowing that I had NO good excuse for missing this walk down memory lane. Except for the fact that I didn't want to go.

This is the great thing about being an adult, in my book. When I was younger, and I didn't want to go to things, my parents would make me go, saying it was "character-building." Now that I have an overabundance of character, I shrug and say, "I'm not going." And no one says a word. Well, except for my best friend from the 2nd grade, who emailed me out of the blue (I haven't talked to her since our freshman year of college, which was...yes, I know you're quick here...9 years ago), wanting to know why I hadn't gone to the reunion. So we're getting together to catch up. And I'm happy about that, it will be good to see her after all this time. And, I'm looking forward to hearing about the soap opera tragedies that have befallen my most arrogant high school classmates (specifically those of marrying their second cousins a week after graduation and having 8 children by now), because this friend actually went to the reunion, and passed along the information that it was a truly horrific experience. It's not your fault, Dave and Buster's (really, who has a reunion at a game arcade?). Put the blame squarely where it belongs. I raise my glass in tribute, with an ironic smile on my face. Fare thee well, class of 1996. And don't let the door hit you in the...on second thought, go ahead and let it hit. It'll be character building.
