Powerless
So, for all those reading this outside of the city of Chicago, we had a monster storm blow through here last night. It included 3 tornadoes. None of which was around me. However, the straight line winds blowing through the city were running at 60-80 mph. Take that, Eduoard. Tropical storms don't got nothin' on the Midwest thunderstorms... I was standing in my second floor apartment at one point, and I felt my apartment sway. Freaky.
Anyway, as I was talking to my sister around 9:15 last night, I found myself sitting suddenly in the dark. My electricity went off, and remains off 22 hours later. My across the hall neighbor said that she talked to the electric company and they said they had to have a construction crew come in and they couldn't tell her when exactly that would be, therefore, they couldn't tell her when our power will be restored.
So this morning, I brought my frozen goods to Scott's and brought a bag of refrigerator goods to work with me. And then I pulled up at work, and my boss met me in the parking lot. No power there, either (on the complete other side of the city, people!). I was sent to our main office for the day, where I finally put my refrigerator items in a refrigerator. I worked almost a full day, then headed home. I cleaned out my refrigerator and freezer, and cleaned my apartment. And now I'm sitting in the gym doing email BECAUSE it's air conditioned. I came to my gym, to get overheated while exercising, because it's air conditioned!! It's brutal hot outside and no air, no fan, no anything...it kinda wears on you. I have to work out and get home in time to take a shower while it's light outside so I don't trip in the shower! Then I'll probably go out to eat because there's nothing else to do--can't watch TV, can't read without lights, can't do much.
The bonus, of course, is that it's very quiet in my apartment. Lots of time for thinking, praying, etc. I have to at least try to look on the bright side. At least it's not negative temps and I'm without heat. :)
Happy Chicago summer! Watch for lightning!
