Pink

I am wearing a pink shirt today. It's a cute top, a soft pink, salmon-y color with a small bright green felt flower on the left side of it that I bought in one of those ridiculously expensive trendy shops. I think that I was okay paying such a large amount for a soft, long-sleeved t-shirt because it was a major victory for me as a redhead. I had been banished from pink from the time I was little, being told that redheads cannot wear pink. I have all these pictures of me as a very young girl wearing pink. So why is it all of a sudden not okay for me to wear pink the minute I hit junior high? But I obediently put all the pastels out to pasture, and went down the road of wearing greens and browns and then eventually, into wearing black almost exclusively, with some jeans thrown in for good measure. But there was a girly part of me that wanted to wear pink, and teal, and purple, and RED! But there were always those people who would say, "You can't wear that...you're a redhead."

Turns out that red, and teal, and purple, and even pink look good on me. The pink can't be a blue-tinged pink, or a bright fuschia, I understand this. But this salmon colored pink works just fine with my red hair and pale skin. I know you don't believe it, but it's true. It even brings out the rosy pink in my cheeks (aided, of course, by blush...HELLO, I'm a ghost-white redhead!!). And I love red. I have to be careful that it's not too orange-y, but most reds are fine. And I know better than to wander down the path of yellows and oranges, thank you. I stay far away from them. But there is tremendous freedom in wearing something you have been told to stay away from for your entire life. :) I am not an overt girly girl, and I do not lust after the pinks of the world. But I like having options, and finding my own way through the fashion world. Redheads of the world, unite. And wear colors!!! And tomorrow, back to black...can't go overboard...
